Nestled in the hills of Northeastern Connecticut, we at Our Lady of Mount Caritas Monastery treasure our fifteen hundred years of Benedictine traditions as we seek to listen to the needs of the Church and reach out to the pain of people in a world torn apart. Located in the town of Ashford, Connecticut within the Diocese of Norwich, Mount Caritas Monastery (pronounced Car-ee-tas) was founded in 1978 by Reverend Mother Mary Peter. We are affiliated with the Benedictine Monks of the Abbey of Saint Benedict in Still River, Massachusetts. On our 37 acres of primitive woodland, we celebrate the life which God has created in the beauty of creation, the blessing of a shared vision. A Franciscian love of God's creatures enriches our lives as we enjoy the presence of various domestic and wild animals. Through them we more easily experience God as loving Creator. Initially, we sought to support ourselves through our bakery, producing bread, cookies and pies which were delivered to stores in the area. As we have continued to listen to God's call, we have been able to enlarge the areas available for guests so that, in the true monastatic tradition, we can be a place of hospitality where people can respond to Jesus' promise "Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28) Our Lady of Mount Caritas Monastery is non-profit, any donations offered are tax deductable and greatly appreciated. At present our need is a larger Chapel not only for ourselves but for our retreats and days of recollection. For further information please contact Reverend Mother Mary Peter at the above address, telephone number, or E-mail address.
